Well, it’s official. WGTZ-FM fired its on-air staff and went to a countdown this week. The countdown led to the announcement of Fly 92.9 on the FM dial, at noon on Friday, November 2, 2007. Some of the tag lines are “The Best of the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, and today. We’ll play anything.” I have had many people contact me about this and I am confident this is what we in the industry call, “stunting”. For their sake I hope so, because the reaction I have gotten from people who listened to the venerable heritage station HATE what they are hearing right now. I have done the best I can to ease the concerns of those that listen, but you never know what can happen.
In my opinion, the best thing they can do is return with a face lift. The last three companies to own the signal have failed to utilize it to its potential. It has fallen far from the glory it was in the mid 90’s when I was a part of the air staff, but I am sure they had their reasons. So if you listen to the ‘Station Formerly known as Z-93′, have faith that this “current” format will likely morph into something better once they’ve hired their new staff.
